"Beyer Peacock in South Australia"

By Steve McNicol

Paperback cover 16 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

It is now over thirty years since the famous English locomotive manufacturer Beyer Peacock & Company Limited finally closed its doors. During the period of railway expansion from 1853 onwards this firm was to leave its mark on locomotive development, not only in Britain but in numerous overseas countries as well. Australia was no exception, and in fact, nearly all of the locomotives supplied to the South Australian Railways narrow gauge system, prior to 1890, were constructed by Beyer Peacock. Beyer Peacock will probably be remembered for the Garratt engines which they pioneered, rather than their earlier contributions, however, these older machines were themselves significant and quite advanced for their time.
