INTRODUCTION
As we progressed with our Narrow Gauge Memories series it became rather obvious that there was so much information available about narrow gauge systems that this series could go on forever. It was our original intention to produce only one book, which grew to three and then five. by the time the twelfth title had reached the planning stage we had totally lost the original idea behind Narrow Gauge Memories. It was turning into a comprehensive but rather disjointed history of the S.A.R. narrow gauge.
This prompted a total rethink and it was decided to stop the Narrow Gauge Memories series at four books. The other titles, some were already underway, would form the basis of a new series entitled S.A.R . Narrow Gauge Journal. This new series would be almost of magazine style, containing narrow gauge articles from numerous contributors, as wekk as soecial editions dealing with particular subjects. An example of the latter would be a book devoted to narrow gauge passenger rolling stock, with numerous photographs, drawings, a vehicle register and historical details.
