"S.A.R. Locomotives 1975"

By Steve McNicol

Paperback cover 16 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

Since our first AN Locomotives book in 1981 there have been many significant changes in the locomotive fleet and operating procedures. The early South Australian Railways classes, still plentiful in 1981, have nearly all disappeared. The main survivors are of the 500, 600, 700 and 830 classes. With the advent of National Rail and the restructuring of Australian National the railways in South Australia are undergoing further dramatic changes to take them into the 21st century.

In this publication we turn the clock back to 1975 to llok at the S.A.R. locomotive fleet. We chose 1975 as it was the last year of S.A.R. operations. On 18th April 1974 the State Transport Authority was formed as the controlling body for public transport services within the state.
