EXCERPT - Stories from the South East - Brake Van Alight by Ted Durbridge

In an early summer morning of 1949 I was working train No. 308 from Naracoorte to Wolseley, as guard of the train. Booking on at 7:00pm I relieved the guard who had worked the train from Mount Gambier.

Normal procedure was that the train would stop with the loco over the pit to clean the fire, take water etc., then pull up to the station afterwards. The train would then be re-marshalled by station staff, detaching and attaching loading as necessary.

On preparation of my train, and completion of the train examiner's testing, I was given a train order to proceed to Hynam, the nest station out. Only Having to shunt there and one other station en route meant an early completion of shift (hopefully).
