The ubiquitous 830 class was introduced as the standard branch line units of the former SAR and was delivered over a ten year period commencing in 1960. The first locomotive entered service on the broad gauge, but were followed later by narrow gauge examples which replaced steam on the port Lincoln and Peterborough divisions. WIth the completion of the Broken Hills to Port Pirie standard gauge line a number of narrow gauge examples were converted to operate over the new line.
