"NR Class - An Early History (NR16-NR30)"

By Ed Tonks

Paperback cover 32 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

As the NR locomotives speed their freight or passenger trains across the varied landscapes of mainland Australia the days of unpainted NRs positioned within the yard of the Goninan plant at Broadmeadow seem to be part of a distant past. If recorders of transport history are motivated by a belief that the scenes of today are the essence of tomorrow's history look no further for vindication than the early days of the NRs. Already many have become veterans in traffic approaching half a million kilometres on the odometer. The bright, shiny and detailed exteriors have been weathered by the elements of a harsh climate and by perverse human effort attacking both the national flag and corporate logos. Such vandalism has also resulted in at least NR22 and NR33 having one nameplate torn off.
