INTRODUCTION

For many years the famed board game Trivial Pursuit contained the interesting question "What state of Australia introduced the first main line diesel in 1950?" Of course it was a trick question, for few would believe that Tasmania was actually the first to do so. However, the main line loco that was introduced in the Apple Isle that year was no main line loco in mainland terms and little more than a lightly powered light lines branch line loco that happened also to be widely used on the lightly laid mine lines of the state. In truth it bore little resemblance to the splendid heavy main line locos of the 44, S and 900 classes that the main land states introduced in the same decade.
