"T.G.R. Locomotives Preserved"

By Steve McNicol

Paperback cover 16 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

The government railway system in Tasmania has always been rather unique, although its locomotive fleet was, in the main, locally adapted products from international manufacturers. From steam propulsion through to the introduction of diesel locomotives the TGR had its own colour schemes and locomotive preferences. It was not until the late 1970s and after TGR had become absorbed by ANR that its individuality slowly began to wane. The change of name from TGR to Tasrail was also part of the new image.

TGR's diesel locomotive fleet was originally made up of English Electric main line locomotives and Drewry shunters. Passenger services were eliminated during the 1970s and the last Tasman Limited ran on 28th July 1978.
