"(VR) T Class Review"

By Michael Bray

Paperback cover 32 pages black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

The 94 members of the T class branch line locomotives, introduced in 1955, consist of three types: 'Flat Top', 'High Nose' and 'Low Nose' series. There were actually eight different orders, with each order seeing some noticable design differences.

As much of the locomotive fleet was nearing 30 years old the year 1983 not only saw a corporate image change to the V/Line orange and grey but also the start of a program of rollingstock modernisation. Initial motive power upgrading saw 13 members from the 'Flat Top' series rebuilt into the P class. In 1984 V/Line started to take delivery of the new high horse powered G class and the N class the following year. The introduction of these two classes resulted in dire consequences for many members for the T class, along with the B, S and Y classes.
