EXCERPT - Impressions of the South East Narrow Gauge Division of the SAR (1949 to 1952) - Part 2

There was an eeir sensation which was always felt when passing through the switch points at Krongart, a siding midway between Penola and Kalangadoo. Several hundred yards to the north east of the approaches to Krongart there occurred a phenomenon where the noise of the locomotive and train passing over a series of limestone caves caused an echo of the event, as if the train was passing through a tunnel. The strange sounds which were made continued until the train was almost halfway through Krongart, then the hollow echoes ceased completely. I often wondered what those caves must be like, deep below, to create an echo of such magnitude. I've not received any information from any source regarding an engineer's views since the broad gauge rail was completed. Maybe the cave system was bypassed?
