EXCERPT - T213 Derailed at Gladston

The Friday 21st January 1938 edition of The Areas Express & Farmers Journal carried the story of a railway accident at Gladstone. At about 6pm on Thursday 13th a goods train leaving Gladstone yard, containing loads of zinc concentrate and wheat for Port Pirie, evidentally struck a derailer block and the loco, louvre van several of the loaded wagons left the track.

The overturned loco rested rather precariously on the edge of an eight foot embankment. The louvre van became lifted into the air while the following six trucks telescoped. About 60 yards of track was damaged and wheat strewn around the ground. Fortunately both the driver and fireman were unhurt. Workmen were soon on the scene to unload the concentrates. Gangs of men worked in the drizzling rain to remove the trucks as they were blocking the main line. Traffic on the main line was held up for several hours.
