"South Australian Rail Year 2009"

By Steve McNicol & Roger Evans

Paperback cover 80 pages colour photos

INTRODUCTION

While this book is not intended to be a complete coverage of all rail related events in South Australia during 2009, it is an attempt to provide a pictorial record of some of the interesting happenings, including train workings, loco combinations and infrastructure work.  For this, our first year book, we have relied on two photographers (with two exceptions) and have concentrated on the Adelaide area and railway lines to the north, but the 2010 edition will look at the entire state.

2009 was an interesting year with a great deal of work undertaken on both railways and tramways, particularly in the Adelaide metropolitan area. Projects such as the refurbishment of the Hills rail line, the tramway extension to the Entertainment Centre, the tramway overpass on South Road, arrival of new trams and in the latter part of the year the commencement of the refurbishment of the Port rail line.

On the main line there were also interesting loco movements as well as the introduction of new diesel loco classes. Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre was officially opened at the end of November. All provided a great deal of variety during the year under review. The photographs have been arranged in month order so that progress on some of the infrastructure programs can be clearly followed.
