INTRODUCTION

Preservation - The Early Years. Dean Harvey OAM was a pivotal figure behind organising and developing railway enthusiast special trains in South Australia during the 1960s and 1970s. A member of the Australian Railways Historical Society (SA Division) from its inception in 1952, from the early 1960s he became clear its elimination was near, he embarked upon negotiating the retention of four broad gauge locomotives for continued operation on special trains from 1968 onwards.

Mr Harvey says he had no illusions of how difficult it would be to persuade SAR to spare some engines for operating steam excursions but with determination (and not a little political brinkmanship) he was able to secure agreement from the railways to retain four engines that, without the society's intervention would certainly have been scrapped.
