"Mini Profile Series No. 16 - Rails Around Peterborough - 1975 to 1989"

By Steve McNicol

Paperback cover 24 pages colour & black/white photos

INTRODUCTION

In this Mini Profile we take a look at the railway scene around Peterborough from 1975 to 1989. This was a very interesting period as it included the rundown of railway facilities, the town's centenary, closure of the Quorn line and the broad gauge link to Adelaide. It also covers the rise of Steamtown as an operating tourist railway, the visit of well known steam locomotive Flying Scotsman, 3801 with the Bicentennial train, transfer of the railways to the Commonwealth and the Australian National Railways era.

As it is not possible to cover all the events in this time period in such a small publication we will concentrate on a few of them, some of the more notable ones and those most of us can relate to. Things we once took for granted in the 1970s and 1980s are now part of our history. We hope you enjoy this nostalgic look back into our more recent past.
