INTRODUCTION

Driving around the country side today its hard to imagine that South Australia once had quite an extensive railway network. Small towns often had stations far in excess of their needs, and with the advent of the family car it was inevitable that closures would take place. but, what was not imagined at the time was the extent of the closures, which ended up leaving that state without any country railway lines or regional passenger services.

Wholesale line closures took place at an alarming rate from the 1960s, marked by the obligatory 'last train' which was usually organised by the Australian Railway Historical Society (SA Div). Some lines went out with great fanfare while others just slipped away.
