INTRODUCTION

The first public railway in South Australia opened on the 19th April 1856 between Adelaide and port Adelaide (Port Dock). An Extension of the line was planned but it was not until after the construction of the new Jervois Bridge that the railway reached the terminus at Sephamore. Work on the railway line itself was completed in September 1877 but the opening had to wait until the new Jervois Bridge was completed and tested, which commenced at the end of December that year.

On 3rd January 1878 approximately 500 people travelled on the first train to Sephamore and the line officially opened on the 7th. However, the new Jervois bridge wasn't officially opened until 6th February, by Sir William Jervois (the Governor of South Australia).
