In November 1997 the American railroad company Genesee & Wyoming (G&W) acquired the South Australian assets of Australian National (AN) from the Australian Federal Government together with a 50 year lease of the track network from the South Australian State Government. That year it commenced rail operations under the brand Australian Southern Railroad (ASR).

In December 2000 Australian Railroad Group (ARG), in a 50-50 joint venture between G&W and Wesfarmers, took over the Westrail freight business in Western Australia (WA) with this operation rebranded as Australian Western Railroad (AWR). In 2002 both ASR and AWR were brought under the ARG brand. Then in December 2003 ARG commenced operating in New South Wales (NSW) with the successful bid to haul flour, grain and starch under a contract with Manildra Group. In the subsequent bid period, however, it lost this contract back to Pacific National (PN) and completely withdrew from NSW.

In 2006 it sold its Western Australian operations to Queensland Rail and bought out Wesfarmers, the new operation rebranded Genesee & Wyoming Australia (GWA). In June 2010, GWA purchased the assets and operating rights of the defunct FreightLink (FL), operator of the Adelaide to Darwin railway. Finally in December 2016 GWA, in conjunction with Macquarie Infrastructure, took over the coal haulage assets operation of Glencore in the Hunter Valley.

Locomotives seen in this presentation include CLF, CLP, G, GWU, GM, X, XRN, 22 (ex-422), 31 (ex-L), 430 and 600 Class, and Hunter and Endeavour twin car passenger sets.
