This presentation covers Queensland Rail’s ‘Spirit of the Outback’ on its journey between Brisbane and Longreach and looks at other passenger and freight operations during and after arrival at Longreach.

The tracks used for this journey are to the North from Brisbane to Rockhampton (commenced in Brisbane in 1882 and completed to Rockhampton in 1898) and then to the west from Rockhampton to Longreach (commenced slightly earlier in 1867 and completed in 1892). Whilst not covered in this presentation, the tracks were extended from Longreach to Winton in the late 1920s. We start our journey at Brisbane’s Roma St railway station and travel on the train right though to Longreach. Interspersed within this rail journey are scenes recorded on the return trip to Brisbane by car, viewing coal and other traffic.

Locomotives seen include QR’s 1720, 2300, 2400, 2470 and 4000 Class diesel electrics and 3500, 3600 and 3800 Class electrics. We also view suburban and intercity electric passenger sets.

Approximate run time: 97 minutes.
