EXCERPT - Saltia Through the Years

Prior to the formation of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society few people would have heard of the railway siding at Saltia, but now it is a popular spot for photographing trains.

The township of Saltia was established prior to the arrival of the railway and was originally a resting place for teamsters on their way through the Pichi Richi Pass. It was the first township in the pass and in 1862 was owned by AC Simmons. By 1869 it had a population of some 200 persons and its business premises comprised of a blacksmith's forge, a general store and a hotel.
