Downs West (DVD)

This DVD video production shows trains at work on the western Darling Downs in southern Queensland, between Miles and Quilpie.

Brisbane was connected with Toowoomba in 1867.

To the west, the rails reached Miles 1878, Roma in 1880, and Charleville in 1888.

A line to Cunnamulla, serving the grazing country to the southwest, opened in 1898.

From Charleville west, a line to Eromanga was projected, to join the impractical, never-constructed “Great Western Railway” from Tobermory to Camooweal.

Construction stalled at Quilpie in 1917.

The Quilpie line is a typical QR country branch, laid in 42lb rail and subject to speed and weight restrictions.

We see the Westlander Miles-Charleville, freight workings, and a steam excursion with AC16 221A between Charleville and Quilpie.

Approximate run time: 75 minutes.
