Melbourne's Tramways (DVD)

Melbourne is one of the world's great tram cities. Over 500 cars, some 70 years old and some brand new, work some 250 route km (160 route miles). In a clockwise progression around the system, many interesting features are picked out, as well as typical scenes. Captions are supplied for most locations.

Melbourne's electric trams replaced an extensive cable network. The system expanded steadily in the 1920s and 1930s. After some stagnation, expansion resumed in the 1970s, when new cars also appeared. Two short railways were converted to "light rail" in 1987. A progressive engineering policy of widening clearances and easing sharp curves enabled the use of 9ft (2.743m) wide cars by the 1970s.

The video includes footage of SW5/6/W7, Z1, Z3, A, and B classes as well as new Citadis and Siemens Combino cars in service.

Approximate run time: 110 minutes.
