Beyer Garratt 6029, the largest operating steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere, was returned to service in August 2014 after an extensive restoration by the ACT Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society. This video illustrates some of the activities the locomotive has undertaken from then through to June 2015.

Highlights include:

  • Coverage of the initial trial run and heavy load test on the Goulburn to Canberra line
  • The inaugural public run to Thirlmere in March 2015 where it worked with 3642 and 3237
  • Double heading on the main southern line with 3642
  • Spectacular scenes recorded in beautiful winter light in near freezing temperatures as the Garratt hauled shuttles out of Wagga Wagga and then returned to Goulburn with a huge train in June 2015.

Approximate run time: 110 minutes.
