In 2007, SCT Logistics took delivery of the first of fifteen SCT Class locomotives to be used on its growing rail network, some of which had previously been hauled by Freight Australia. These GT46C ACe models feature AC traction equipment and are rated at 3210kw (4300 HP).

Following this success, Downer had intended to produce more GT46C ACe locomotives for lease out to rail operators through its subsidiary, Locomotive Demand Power. The first 3 of these were constructed and painted in their blue and white livery when QR National signed up to lease 9 such locomotives. Whilst the first 3 (LDP001-LDP003) retained their blue and white livery and numbers, be it with QR National logo applied, the remainder (numbered LDP004-LDP009) came in QR National livery and stayed until Aurizon (formerly QR National) withdrew from the intermodal market.

LDP010-LDP018 were originally built for the leasing project but some were sold directly to Pacific National as TT Class in 2009. The first 8 of the class (TT01-TT08) have a heavier ballast weight capability whilst the remainder (numbered TT101-TT132) do not. They are all fitted with ECP braking for use on long coal trains. Pacific National is also using some of the ex-QR National LDP Class in their non-coal train services. They also operate three WH Class locomotives, built in 2011, in coal service on behalf of their owner, Whitehaven Coal.

In 2011 Genesee & Wyoming Australia (today renamed One Rail Australia) ordered 7 (later increased to 10) GWA Class for their expanding operations in both South Australia grain and Northern Territory intermodal traffic. And, to complete the GT46C ACe story, in 2014 Southern Shorthaul Railroad purchased LDP013 and LDP014 which became their SSR 101 and SSR 102 and are used for grain haulage within NSW.

In this DVD we will view all of the above classes of Downer EDI Rail’s GT46C ACe in service.

Approximate run time: 157 minutes.
