The presentations Illawarra Line Pt1 and Illawarra Line Pt2 covered rail operation on the Illawarra Line filmed in the period 1995 to 2007. This presentation, Illawarra Line Review 2009, reflects the major changes that have occurred to operations, rolling stock and the permanent way since 2007.

The main drivers for this review have been (1) the recent Pacific National Southern Coal Division’s shortages of locomotives and coal hauling rolling stock leading to ‘conventional’ train consists of quad 82 Class and 45 NHSH coal wagons being often substituted by varying consists of BL, C, DL, G, GL, 81, 82 and/or 92 Class locomotives hauling varying wagon consists of between 40 to 50 NHSH, NHVF, NHTF and/or NHHF wagons, (2) the withdrawal of some operators (ATN Access and ARG) and the merger and full integration of others (Freight Corp and National Rail to form Pacific National) and (3) the withdrawal of specific equipment types. We have a brief review of the specific losses in (2) and (3) at the conclusion of this presentation.

Locomotive classes seen in this presentation include BL, C, DL, G, GL, GM, L 2200, 3100, 422, 44, 442, 45, 48, 80, 81, 82, 85, 86 and the new Goninan GE 92 Class in the liveries of ARG, ATN Access, Austrac, BHP, CFCLA, Coote Industrial, Freight Corp, Great Northern, National Rail, NSWGR, Pacific National and South Spur while passenger equipment includes the S and T Suburbans and V and Oscar Interurbans of CityRail.
