The original New South Wales Government Railway (NSWGR) Newcastle railway station was located at Honeysuckle Point. Following pressure from Newcastle residents for a station nearer to the centre of town, a new station was built near the corner of Scott St and Watt St, opening in 1858. The line connected this new Newcastle station to the Main Northern Line and Short North Line via the triangle at Hamilton/Islington Junction and also serviced the stations of Hamilton, Wickham and Civic.

In 2014 the NSW government closed the line beyond Hamilton to better connect the older commercial business district to the waterfront precinct of Honeysuckle, resulting in the closure of Wickham, Civic and Newcastle stations. In 2017 a new terminus railway station, named Newcastle Interchange, was opened not far from the site of the former Wickham station with the intent to serve train, bus and eventually light rail interchanges. In February 2019 the Newcastle Light Rail commenced commercial operations, connecting Newcastle Interchange to Newcastle Beach, the latter located not far from the 1858 Newcastle Station.

The Newcastle Light Rail starts at the Newcastle Interchange station, moves along the former NSWGR road bed until near Honeysuckle, where it moves onto Hunter St and then Scott St, paralleling the old NSWGR line, and terminates at the corner of Scott St and Pacific St at a Light Rail platform named Newcastle Beach, not far from the 1858 Newcastle Railway Station. Six Urbos 100 trams, built by Spanish manufacturer CAF, were purchased to operate the route and, unlike the earlier Sydney Light Rail trams, they do not need overhead wiring. Instead there is a charging station at each tram stop. During passenger pick up/set down, a pantograph is raised from the centre of these 5 car sets to charge storage equipment carried on each tram.

Approximate run time: 82 minutes.
