The Geelong & Melbourne Railway Co started work on tracks between Geelong and Melbourne back in 1855, opening the 15km section between Geelong and Lara in late 1856, with the 10km and 36km extensions through to Little River and Newport South respectively both opening in 1857.

The Victorian Government completed the remaining 12km section between Spencer St (now Southern Cross) railway station and Newport South and eventually purchased the Newport South to Geelong section of track from the Geelong & Melbourne Railway Co. By 1890, the government had extended this broad gauge line some 190km out to Warrnambool.

The standard gauge track between the Spencer St station and Tottenham Yard was opened back in 1962 as part of the standard gauge line between Sydney and Melbourne. When the Melbourne to Adelaide standard gauge was introduced, the track between Tottenham and North Geelong (and beyond to the South Australian border) became operational in 1995.

In this presentation, we will view both standard and broad gauge freight and passenger trains as we move from Melbourne to Geelong and then concentrate on train operation at and around the Geelong region. Locomotives seen in action include A, CLF, CSR, G, LDP, N, NR, P, S, SCT, T, X, XR, Y and 81 Class while passenger rolling stock includes Velocity, Sprinter and Metro self propelled equipment.

Approximate run time: 98 minutes.
