Tahmoor Coal Pt1 traced the operation of 32 wagon NHSH type push-pull coal trains between Port Kembla and Tahmoor via Moss Vale in the period 1994 to 2000. Power in that period was Freight Corp’s 81 and/or 82 Class.

Tahmoor Coal Pt 2 covers the same operation in the period 2013 to 2014. In this timeframe these trains, now operated by Pacific National, have been increased to the ‘standard’ 45 wagon NHSH type format used by the Southern Coal Division of PacNat based at Port Kembla for servicing the Western Coal Fields and Illawarra local collieries. Recently TT class have been introduced and we trace these and other rail traffic as we move empty from Port Kembla Inner Harbour via Moss Vale to Tahmoor Colliery and full on the return journey. Because of the increased length of these trains, the ‘head shunt” and signalling at Tahmoor Colliery Junction have had to be modified.

Locomotives seen include NR, TT and 81 Classes as well as passenger rolling stock in the form of Oscars and Endeavours of CityRail and CountryLink. We also visit the now closed Bradkin manufacturing plant at Braemar where all the Clyde Engineering 82 Class were built back in 1994/95 and where many classes of rolling stock were subsequently constructed by Bradkin until 2013.

Approximate run time: 95 minutes.
