The presentations Werris Creek Line Pt 1 and Werris Creek Line Review Pt 1 covered operation of trains on the line between Muswellbrook and Werris Creek in the periods 2001 and 2010 respectively. This presentation, Werris Creek Line Revisited Pt 1 traces action on the Werris Creek Line (which more correctly should be referred to as part of The Main Northern Line) from Muswellbrook to Werris Creek and then back on the return trip to Muswellbrook in 2019.

With the harsh drought, coal is the dominant haulage commodity on this line in early 2019, and those passing loops like Murulla, Parkville, Ardglen and Braefield which were extended to accommodate Pacific National’s 72 wagon (NHSH style 80 tonne capacity wagon) coal trains hauled by triple 82 Class, as seen in the earlier presentation Werris Creek Review Pt1 released back in 2010, now handle 82 wagon (NHIH style 100 tonne capacity wagon) trains hauled by triple 92/93 Class. Additionally Aurizon is now operating coal haulage on this line utilising 82 wagon (QHCH 100 tonne capacity wagon) trains hauled by either twin 5000/5020 or triple 6000/6020 Class locomotives. PacNat and Aurizon each provide their own banker locomotives for banking their trains up the Liverpool Ranges. (See the presentation Ardglen Bankers Review 2019).

Whilst at Werris Creek we take a brief look at the Werris Creek coal mine balloon loop (formerly a push-pull dead end operation utilising the old Binnaway tracks), the old turntable area of the locomotive depot with many elderly locomotives (BL, DL, X, 48, 80, and even an 86 electric) standing around the turntable, the goods yard full of empty grain wagons and the silo facility. Locomotives seen in action include CF, G, 482, 82, 92, 93, 5000, 5020, 6000 and 6020 Class.

Approximate run time: 154 minutes.
