“Just South Australian Trains 3 (Retro) 1998-2000” is a production featuring a wide variety of locomotives, colour schemes and operators, with explanatory footnotes. We emphasise the video contains much loco noise, including standing starts.
A highlight is the test grain train featuring the “BU” class powered, remotely by ALF and GM locomotives, struggling, and I mean struggling, through the Adelaide Hills. Goodwin-Alcos and General Electric locomotives are not forgotten, as well as flashbacks to English Electric locomotives.
The program describes the changing scene of rail operation with flashbacks to 1982, using digitized cine film, then original video 8 and Hi-8 video cameras, standard for that time.
We view the changes from the Australian National Railway, through the National Rail era, to operation by Genesee & Wyoming Australia and other private rail operators. Filming took place from Dimboola, Victoria to Bordertown to Adelaide and Adelaide to Port Augusta. We see the Penrice Quarry cable system.
Locomotive classes included are ALF, BL, BU, CLP, CLF, AN, DL, EL, GM, NR, 500, 600, 700, 800, 830, 930, DA, 81, C, G, CK, Bluebird, Redhen, 2000 and 3000 series railcars.
