Commencing in 1890 Chief Mechanical Engineer Thow implemented a new design of Suburban car, based upon the existing American style of open saloon style seating. Some 550 new cars were delivered between 1890 and 1912 , they were arguably the backbone of steam hauled suburban and short country services.
The majority were delivered with the common Mansard roof cross section. In 1911 CME Lucy, who’d replaced Thow, introduced 78 cars with a Low-elliptical roof cross-section. In 1911-12 the final 54 cars were delivered with a new High-elliptical roof cross-section.
The new cars were marshalled into 5 -, 6 - and 8 car sets, however this was constantly changing due to traffic demands and conversions. The balance of the cars were loose stock and available on demand to build up set sizes.
Many changes occurred during the life of these cars, the addition of internal toilets for Tourist and Intercity working, an Improved Brake end for Guards accommodation in the later sets and the conversion of many cars into special requirement stock.
The Austrains NEO models feature many improved and new features from the first production run. In addition to the changes are also a Low-elliptical roof profile to offer an enhanced selection of set numbers and a new appearance.
